Description
Sole — Nangu in Tamil, Manthal in Malayalam — is a flat, delicate fish with soft, sweet white flesh and very few bones, a gentle choice that fries to a lovely crisp.
Loved across communities
A quiet favourite in Tamil, Malayali and Sri Lankan homes, and equally at home on a British plate. Because it’s so mild and easy to eat, it’s a fish the whole family enjoys.
Popular dishes
The classic is a nangu fry / manthal fry — semolina-crusted and crisp — plus a light sole curry. It also takes a Western butter-and-lemon pan-fry beautifully.

Good to know
Is Sole the same as Nangu or Manthal?
Yes — Nangu in Tamil, Manthal in Malayalam. It’s the delicate flatfish loved for a crisp fry.
What does sole taste like?
Soft, sweet and very mild — one of the gentlest fish on the counter, which is why it suits children and light meals.
Does it have many bones?
Very few — it’s one of the easiest fish to eat, especially filleted.
What’s the best way to cook sole?
A crisp semolina fry, or a simple butter-and-lemon pan-fry. It cooks in minutes, so don’t overdo it.
How is it packed for delivery?
Cleaned to order, vacuum-packed in a sealed bag and sent chilled, so it arrives fresh and clean with no leaks in the box.
