Description
Shark — Sura in Tamil — is a firm, boneless fish (just cartilage, no bones) with dense, meaty white flesh, a South Indian and Sri Lankan favourite for hearty fries and the traditional sura puttu.
Loved across communities
A traditional favourite in Tamil and Sri Lankan Tamil homes, often chosen because it has no bones at all — an easy, reassuring choice for children and elders, and a taste many grew up with.
Popular dishes
The classic is sura puttu — the meat cooked down and scrambled with coconut, onion and spices — alongside a sura varuval (fry) and a peppery sura kuzhambu (curry).
Recipe ideas
Cook it in a mild fish sothi or a Goan curry. More in our seafood recipes.

Good to know
Is Shark the same as Sura?
Yes — Sura in Tamil. It’s a firm, boneless fish (just cartilage) with dense, meaty white flesh.
Does it have bones?
No bones at all — only cartilage — which is exactly why it’s such an easy, safe choice for children and elders.
What is sura puttu?
A beloved South Indian dish: the cooked meat is flaked and scrambled with coconut, onion and spices into a soft, savoury puttu.
What does it taste like?
Dense and meaty with a mild, clean flavour that soaks up coconut and spice really well.
How is it packed for delivery?
Cleaned and cut to order, vacuum-packed in a sealed bag and sent chilled, so it arrives fresh and clean with no leaks in the box.
