Description
Sardines — Mathi or Chaala in Malayalam, Mathi in Tamil, Tarli in Konkani and Goa — are small, oily and packed with flavour, the everyday fish at the very heart of Kerala home cooking.
Loved across communities
If Kerala had a everyday fish, it’s Mathi — and it’s just as loved in Tamil, Konkani, Goan and Sri Lankan kitchens. Affordable and rich in omega-3, it’s honest comfort food.
Popular dishes
The classic is a smoky, tangy mathi curry cooked with kudampuli, alongside a crisp mathi fry, a Goan tarli fry, and Kerala sardine peera.

Good to know
Are Sardines the same as Mathi or Tarli?
Yes — Mathi or Chaala in Malayalam, Mathi in Tamil, Tarli in Konkani and Goa. It’s all the same small, oily sardine.
What do sardines taste like?
Rich and full-flavoured — an oily fish that carries tangy kudampuli and coconut beautifully.
Do they have many bones?
They have small bones that soften with a crisp fry or a slow curry, so they’re easy to eat cooked through.
What’s the best way to cook sardines?
A tangy Kerala curry with kudampuli, or a crisp spiced fry — both make the most of their rich flavour.
How are they packed for delivery?
Cleaned to order, vacuum-packed in a sealed bag and sent chilled, so they arrive fresh and clean with no leaks in the box.
